What is refractive surgery?
The refractive surgery covers the techniques used to correct visual impairments such as short-sightedness, astigmatism, the’hyperopia and, in some cases, the presbyopia. The aim being to break free from the dependence on wearing glasses and contact lenses.
There are two main techniques in this field: Treatment by laser and treatment with intraocular implants.
Appropriate and specialised techniques
The ophthalmic surgeons at our Neovision Clinic, specialising in refractive surgery, perform a range of procedures depending on the patient’s clinical presentation.
To date, there are two main types of refractive surgery: the laser refractive surgery (Smile, Lasik, PKR, Presbylasik) and the refractive surgery using implants (ICL and PRELEX). Our team of ophthalmologists is fully trained in each of these approaches and will be able to advise you on the choice of technique for refractive surgery the most suitable one.

Key information
Refractive surgery: which vision problems can it treat?
The refractive surgery involves correcting ametropia, which corresponds to visual impairments resulting from the incorrect refraction of light rays in the eye; there are three types:
- the short-sightedness (short-sightedness); ;
- the’astigmatism (blurred vision at both near and far distances); ;
- the’hyperopia (various conditions that can affect both near and far vision).
A fourth flaw, the presbyopia, occurs as a result of the lens of the eye ageing over time. This condition manifests as a increasingly blurred close-up vision from the age of 40.
Refractive surgery is an effective way of avoiding the need to wear glasses or contact lenses. Depending on the condition you have and its severity, your practitioner will recommend the best technique for refractive surgery.
Please note, however, that this is not a miracle cure; you may be offered a spare pair of glasses depending on your daily activities and your expectations, and in some cases, your eyesight may deteriorate again over the years.
What is the best type of refractive surgery?
Each technique has its advantages and disadvantages: only a qualified ophthalmologist specialising in refractive surgery will be able to advise you on the most suitable option for your individual case. However, the characteristics of the various methods used by the specialists at Ophta Santé can be summarised as follows:
- LASIK: Highly reliable, fast and accurate, this technique can correct vision problems associated with short-sightedness, astigmatism and long-sightedness.
- Smile: Offering unrivalled precision, minimal post-operative complications and excellent long-term stability, this approach is suitable for cases of short-sightedness and astigmatism but can only be performed once (no touch-ups are possible).
- PKR and TransPKR: Recommended for cases of mild short-sightedness, astigmatism or long-sightedness, they are often painful in the post-operative period.
- Presbylasik: Designed to correct presbyopia, this technology aims to achieve a satisfactory balance between near and distance vision.
- Eye implants : this alternative is recommended for patients who are not suitable for the previous techniques (severe ametropia and/or corneas that are too thin).
